Farnum did not die in 1878.  He left Deadwood in 1877, when Deadwood's existing ad hoc government  ended due to the creation of Lawrence County's government, and his then unsuccessful run for the position of Lawrence County Justice of the Peace, and because of financial difficulties.  He is listed in the US federal census in 1880, then living in Chicago, and in the 1900 census living in Tennessee.
